Viewer advice: Contains mature themes

Three Afghan women who occupy different positions in Kabul’s social ladder each face a big challenge. The traditional Hava, who lives with her father and mother-in-law, is pregnant and largely neglected; her only source of joy is talking to the baby in her belly. Maryam, an educated TV news reporter, is about to get a divorce from her unfaithful husband, but finds out she is expecting. And 18-year-old Ayesha, whose boyfriend disappears after learning that she is carrying his child, accepts a marriage proposal from her cousin. Amid a sometimes unsympathetic society, each woman must find a way to solve her problem by herself for the first time.

The fiction debut of documentarian Sahraa Karimi is an affecting, humanistic portrait of the intricacies of gender, culture and class, as well as the ways in which Afghan women are fighting to take back their destinies.

Includes an introduction by Cristóbal Escobar.
